  AIC Volume 3, Number 1

2010 Hubble Award Recipient

After much deliberation and quite a bit of discussion that preceded a unanimous vote, the Advanced Imaging Conference Board of Directors is pleased to announce the 2010 Hubble Award will be bestowed upon Russell Croman, of Austin, Texas. This was a difficult decision because there were several well deserving candidates under consideration. However, in light of Russ' many contributions to the astrophotographic community- his magnificent sky scapes and popular software offerings that eliminate common processing challenges are but two examples- the Board regarded him to be the very best choice for this important accolade. We hope you will agree.

Interestingly, Russ was one of the original AIC Board members, serving from 2004 through 2006 as its Registrar. Much of our continuing success rests upon the hard work he selflessly contributed. He was also one of the first to recognize the value and overcome the challenges of operating a remote observatory located far from city light pollution. His Dimension Point Observatory, situated high in the south central Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico and equipped with a half meter telescope, was one of the initial private fully-remote installations in that area and helped lead the small stampede that has made Mayhill, New Mexico, what some regard as, the world's capital of astrophotography.

Russ also helped popularize the use of mapped color imagery. His techniques are presented in Ron Wodaski's The NewAstro Zone System for Astro Imaging, which Russ co-authored. Pursuing his career as a professional integrated circuit designer, Russ nonetheless exhibits the aesthetic heart of a gifted artist- just a brief glance at Russ' images can evoke strong reactions from even the most jaded viewer. Many consider Russ to be the finest astrophotographer on the planet!

Although family and career obligations have prevented Russ from producing new images over the past few years, the Board hopes you agree this fall's meeting will be a rare opportunity, not to be missed, to meet and hear one of the pillars of our hobby when he gives the Hubble Award Lecture at AIC 2010.

Coming Soon! Join the AIC

The cost of operating our annual meetings has grown, sometimes explosively, over the past few years. Remember, our meetings are only financially possible because of the fees we charge our attendees and exhibitors. However, given the current economic environment, it has been difficult to keep a lid on our prices without reducing the quality of our gatherings- which is something we will not permit.

So, to supplement our normal operating income, the AIC plans to launch a new annual membership program that enables you to support and help guarantee future conferences. In the process, you'll gain many unique benefits that will make your participation at the annual meeting more exciting. Plus, AIC membership will enable you to save money spent on the hobby so the value of being a member will easily equal or exceed your small investment to join or renew.

AIC Membership benefits will include:
  • Exclusive access to online AIC members-only information and content;
  • Conference discounts that reduce your three-day registration fee and hotel room costs;
  • Invitations to attend Members-only workshops during the conference;
  • Attendance at the plated Member appreciation luncheon during the conference on workshop Friday;
  • Early admittance into the Technology Showcase exhibition area on workshop Friday;
  • Advanced seating selection during the weekend sessions;
  • A thank-you gift that you'll find useful;
  • Discounts off subscriptions to selected popular magazines and
  • Reductions off your purchases at leading participating suppliers, service providers and merchants throughout the year.
